In Loving Memory of James (Jim the Barber) Canton
It is with deep sadness and much love that we announce the passing of James Walter Canton, who left us peacefully on May 5, 2025, at Trillium Villa, at the age of 79.
James was a gentle soul, known for his generous spirit and unwavering kindness to all who knew him. He was the beloved son of the late William and Jean Canton and stepson of Hildegarde. James is lovingly remembered by his devoted brother Brian and sister-in-law Ann, along with extended family and dear friends.
Jim attended barbering school in Windsor in 1965. In the 1970s, as long hair became fashionable, traditional barber schools like the one Jim trained at began closing, replaced by hairstyling schools. Despite the changing times, Jim persevered. In 1996, he opened “Kirk’s Barber Shop” welcoming customers as early as 5:30 a.m. so they could get a haircut on their way to work. He was always trusted to keep in confidence whatever was shared in his shop. Jim was a good listener, many of his customers found themselves confiding in him, sometimes almost like a therapy session. His chair wasn’t just a place for a haircut, but a place where people felt heard and cared for. Jim hung up his clippers on July 31, 2016, after 51 years in business.
His care for people extended well beyond the barbershop. Even after retiring, Jim continued to provide haircuts through hospital visits, in-home appointments, and at nursing homes, always bringing comfort and familiarity to those who needed it most.
Jim’s friends were an important part of his life. To avoid the risk of forgetting anyone, we simply say that he cherished spending time with each and every one of you, especially his coffee club group.
Jim touched many lives with his warmth, quiet strength, and caring nature. His memory will forever be held in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A special thank you to the entire staff at Trillium Villa for their support and compassionate care over the past nine months, and to the residents for their warm thoughts and prayers. We also extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. O’Mahony, Dr. Springer, Dr. Yoshida, Dr. Lilly, and the nurses at Bluewater Health’s Oncology Department for the exceptional care given to Jim. Special thanks as well to Janet, Community Care Coordinator, and all the community groups who supported Jim throughout his journey.
As per Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on June 5 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the D. J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre.
