Joanne Elvera Newman

NEWMAN, JOANNE - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Joanne Elvera Newman, age 79 of Sarnia on Monday, June 8, 2020 at Bluewater Health. She was the loving wife of David Newman, dear mother of Michael Newman and cherished grandmother of Allysen and Suzanne Newman of Sarnia and Christine Garby of Stratford. She was the great grandmother of Jade, Hudson and Elizabeth, all of Stratford.

She was also survived by a sister Sharon Fisher, her brother Kenneth Voege and a large number of nephews and nieces throughout Ontario and Michigan.

She was predeceased by her infant son Freddie, her father the Reverend Herman Voege, mother Melinda Voege (Nuhn), and sister Susan Dewyer.

Joanne was a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and a primary school teacher with a passion for good children’s books and literacy. She taught for 34 years in Sarnia from 1961 to 1995 mainly at Cathcart and Rosedale schools and volunteered post retirement to teach children having difficulty with reading.

She had deep faith and was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church where she played the organ and was an active participant in church activities.

A small visitation and funeral service with immediate family only will be held at the D. J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre (102 N. Victoria St, Sarnia, ON, N7T 5W9) on Friday, June 12.

Charitable donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Due to the current Covid-19 crisis and the current restrictions placed on funeral homes a celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at a later date.
