Leonid Yasuchenko

June 7, 1951 — March 27, 2019

Peacefully at Bluewater Health on Wednesday March 27, 2019.  LEO YASUCHENKO was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1951 to Walter and Alvena who predeceased him along with his beloved grandmother and his neighbour and good friend Mrs. Marinigh. He grew up in the Westdale area with his good friends the Durneys, cheering on the TigerCats and attending Westdale Secondary and Hamilton Collegiate. He was the drummer for a rock and roll group influenced mainly by “The Band” and that helped inspire the punk band Teenage Head. He graduated from McMaster University as a chemical engineer and had a second career there editing the satirical engineering newspaper sharing an office with Dave Thomas of Second City who edited the main campus newspaper. In Sarnia Leo worked first for Dow where he organized a recreational baseball team and later at Suncor. Working in Sarnia he met lifelong friends especially at Brittany Arms and Stokes. Over the years he was a member of the Sarnia Library Book Club, the Sarnia Computer Users Group and the Newell Street Saturday Coffee Group. He enjoyed the wildlife of Canatara Park, Canada Day, chemistry, computers, sports, science fiction and trivia. He was a charter season ticket holder for the Sarnia Imperials for example. His gentlemanly manner will be missed by all his friends and acquaintances especially Jeff Beeler, Tara Bethune, Brian and Judy Matheson, Eric Cosman and his wife Nancy and their children Jennifer and Jordan, Leonard Segall and Marilyn Mason, the Sarnia Library Book Club especially Ann Horodyski and John McNeill and the Newell Street Saturday Coffee Group. Donations in Leo Yasuchenko’s name can be made to McMaster University or the Pallative Care Unit of Bluewater Health in thanks for their great care of him in his last days. His ashes will be scattered from the platform past the Sarnia Bay Marina on the west side of The Point Lands at 3 PM on Saturday April 6, 2019.  There will be a gathering of Leo's friends and acquaintances at Ups and Downs afterward. His wry sense of humor, and his delicious sense of irony will be missed.  Arrangements entrusted to the D. J. ROBB FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE.
