Marjorie Vernice Grant

July 27, 1929 — December 21, 2023

Sarnia

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our mother, Marjorie Vernice Grant (nee Maitland) on Thursday December 21, 2023.  Loving wife of 58 years to the late Ian Douglas Grant (2006). Marj was born in 1929, in Detroit and emigrated to Sarnia at 2 years old. Mom was loved by all who knew and met her, always young at heart and more than ready for her next adventure!  At 16, Marj was very happy to get a job at Bell Telephone as an operator and was always proud of being a “Bell Girl”. Her next job was at Imperial Oil, where she met her future husband, Ian. They got married and Marj worked at home raising their family for the next 20 years. Marj wanted to work out of the home again, so she got a job at Woolco and then Walmart where she worked in the Ladies Wear and helped co-ordinate Fashion Shows.

During her marriage, Mom got her motorcycle license, and her and Ian bought a sailboat and they learned how to sail Lake Huron and the North Channel…she loved both! Marj enjoyed her grandchildren, our pets, card and coffee club, yoga and socializing at the Sarnia Yacht Club with her many friends. Mom was known for her love of black and white clothing .. we always joked with her about it!

After Ian’s passing, travelling was one of Marj’s adventures she would always reminisce of, times in Qatar, Amsterdam, (she said it felt like home), her dream of going to Paris realized, Mexico and the Caribbean. She travelled with family and friends and her companion Harold. Mom lived at Landmark Retirement Home for about 8 years, and after a fall, moved to North Lambton Lodge where she had excellent care… all of the staff called her an angel… well deserved!

Marj is survived by her children Doug (Patti), John, Susan (Terry) and James (Randi). Loved by grandchildren Brooke (Beata) and Burke, Cassy and Chantal, Kyle and Matt, Alison, Jacklyn (Tanner), Ian, Royce and Ada. Great grandchildren: Emerson and Avery, Massey and Lainey. Gary (Nancy) Maitland (Brother), Dave Maitland (Brother), Ina (Bob) Maitland (Sister-in-law), Rolande (Don) Maitland  and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by Harold Bolton (Companion), Marion Moore (Sister), Bob, Don and Ken Maitland (Brothers), Carrie and George Maitland  (Parents), Leeanne  Lavigne (John’s friend).

Very special thanks to Dr. William Buckton and Staff at the North Lambton Lodge in Forest for all their care and love.

A Celebration of Marj’s Life will be held at the D.J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre (102 Victoria Street, North, Sarnia, ON N7T 5W9) on Sunday January 14th at 1:00 p.m. with visitation commencing at 11:00 a.m. until service time.
