Wenda Lee Hughes

August 15, 1940 — January 9, 2017

HUGHES, WENDA - Wenda (Wendy) Lee Walker Hughes passed away peacefully after a lengthy cancer battle under the compassionate care of Dr. Maddison and St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia, Ontario. Wendy is survived by children Tom; Vancouver, Ryan (Michele Fliss); Sarnia, and Natasha (John Germain); Toronto. Wendy was born August 15, 1940 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to the late Joseph and Mary (MacLean) Walker. Wendy leaves behind siblings John (Carmaine); Halifax, Catherine Roberts (Richard); Pittsfield, Mass., Maureen MacDonald (Ross deceased 2006); Sydney, Marion Beaton (John) Mabou, Everett (Mona); Sydney, Charles (Wendy); Calgary, Gordon (Marsha); Calgary, Joanne Chase (Steve); Halifax and sister in law Angela (Alec) MacDonald; Sarnia, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Wendy is predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Thomas Hughes (2007). In the spring of 2010, Wendy was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer. Her determination led her to surpass all odds and overcome many setbacks over the course of her battle. Much of that will and strength came from her affection for her grandchildren, Sydney, Cameron, Morgan, Leo, Harper, Thomas, and Preston. Wendy would not have been capable of enduring many parts of her journey if it had not been for her Angel Warriors holding her up every step of the way. She was given the gifts of dignity and respect during her illness by her coach, leader, confidante, and powerhouse, Amy Hughes, as well as the unwavering support from her lifelong friends, Fran, Marg, Elaine, Donna, and Edith. Sarnia’s CCAC and the VON teams cared for Wendy regularly and their visits often made her day. The entire Bluewater Health staff in Oncology, Emergency, ICU, and Palliative all gave Wendy exemplary care, particularly Dr. Dosteler, Dr. Yoshida, and her G.P. Dr. Borek. Arrangements have been entrusted to D. J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre (102 Victoria St N, Sarnia). Cremation and a private family service has taken place. Should you wish to make donations in her name, kindly consider St. Joseph’s Hospice, or Canadian Alzheimer Society. Memories and messages of condolence may be sent through www.djrobb.on.ca
